PARIS, 2010 Broadband World Forum
- Oct 25, 2010 – Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM),
a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent
processing for networking, communications and the digital
home, and MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in embedded
Linux® commercialization, announced the availability of
a reference platform with Android on the ECONA dual core ARM
processors for the digitally connected home and office applications
such as FTTX broadband gateways, Networked Storage, Internet
streaming devices and SMB Gateways. With this offering, the
ECONA CNS3XXX ARM processors provide market-ready platforms
for customers looking to leverage the openness, shorter development
cycles and flexibility that the Android platform offers. With
the explosion of multi-media service consumption within the
connected home, Android-based platforms play a critical role
in managing the delivery and maintenance of these services
– both on the gateways as well as the client devices.
Android is open source, and fully customizable service
delivery platform that offers a full stack: an operating
system, middleware, and key applications. It also contains
a rich set of APIs that allows third-party developers to
develop media-rich applications. With this tight integration,
Android can help device manufacturers reduce prototyping
time. As a completely Open Source stack, Android has been
able to generate a lot of interest in markets outside of
the original target of mobile phones. These include –
MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices), PNPs (Portable Navigation
Devices), Internet-connected Home Entertainment / Digital
Media Devices, Medical and other consumer devices.
The ECONA CNS3XXX
family of ARM-based energy efficient processors offers single
and dual ARM11 MPCore™ processors, a rich set of integrated
hardware accelerators and a range of I/Os for glueless voice,
video and data connectivity. Sophisticated power management
techniques enable super low-power operation starting at
less than 1 watt.
. Part of the MontaVista Rapid
Deployment Program for Android, the reference platform
includes a commercial quality Linux port to the ECONA CNS3XXX
ARM processor platform and support for the appropriate on-chip
hardware acceleration blocks including graphics acceleration.
It also integrates the drivers for the peripherals including
Bluetooth, 802.11n and Touch Panel Display. In addition,
the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is integrated to work
with the Android ver2.2 (“Froyo”) framework.
Integration of the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)
Digital Media Server (DMS) library with Android is also
complete. As a result, support for rich Internet and multimedia
applications like Internet Radio, YouTube access are pre-built
into the reference platform. Detailed test and quality assurance
reports for the entire system are also available.
