Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc. Selects the new Super Energy Efficient ECONA™ Processors to Power Their Next Generation Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Gateways

Cavium Networks ECONA Dual-core System on Chip (SoC) processors slashes cost and power while delivering high-performance advanced and scalable services to the digital home

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. September 8th , 2009 Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage, wireless, video and security applications, today announced that Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc.(SEN), a leading provider of broadband access equipment for major carrier customers in the Japan market, has selected the latest generation of the ECONA SoC processor to power their next-generation FTTH gateway. The highly integrated ECONA CNS3XXX SoC processor family provides a rich set of integrated hardware accelerators and a range of I/Os for glueless voice, video and data connectivity. Combined with the industry’s best power management features, the ECONA CNS3XXX processor family is best suited for gigabit-class digital home gateways while continuing to push the envelope of power and cost reduction. SEN uses the OCTEON® CN50XX family in their currently shipping FTTH gateways.

With more than 10 million subscribers for fiber-based residential services, Japan undoubtedly leads the world in FTTH deployments. As this subscriber base continues to grow rapidly, consumers are not only demanding faster internet connections but they are also looking for sophisticated data, voice and video and security services that can be deployed on the gateway. These services provide an additional avenue for service providers to increase their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). Additionally, green initiatives are setting aggressive power reduction goals for next generation high-volume gateways deployed in the home. Consequently, the residential gateways that drive these deployments need higher performance, integration of more features, sophisticated power management and the capability to enable application virtualization for deployment of a wide-range of third party services.

The ECONA CNS3XXX family of SoC processors integrates up to 2 ARM11 MPCore™ processors and over 10 Application Acceleration Engines for gigabit switching, Hardware-based NAT and QoS, L2 – L4 packet processing, TCP offload, security, RAID, image processing and L7 content inspection. Additionally, a flexible set of peripheral interfaces including 3x gigabit Ethernet (supporting RGMII / GMII / MII), Dual PCIe, USB2.0, SATA – all with integrated PHYs, BT.656, TDM/PCM and I2S to ensure best-in-class wired and wireless connectivity options to all of the popular consumer gadgets including cameras, media storage, USB network adapters, digital photo frames and many more. With best-in-class integrated power management, the ECONA CNS3XXX family of SoC processors is the leader in energy efficiency with power consumption of less than 1 watt at the low-end to less than 2.5 watts at the high-end.

“Our requirements for the next generation gateways included higher performance, more features at lower Bill Of Materials (BOM) cost with significantly lower power consumption,” said Minoru Kuramoto, General Manager, Network Products Group, Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc. “The ECONA CNS3420 met and exceeded all of our requirements while slashing the power consumption by over 50%. The innovative dual-core architecture of the ECONA CNS3420 provides us critical CPU headroom scalability for deploying additional services”

“We are delighted to be selected again by SEN for their next generation FTTH gateway,” said Syed Ali, President and CEO, Cavium Networks. “The ECONA family of SoC processors continues our tradition of being in close touch with market requirements to architect solutions with best-in-class performance, features, power and cost for emerging high-bandwidth broadband gateways, while meeting our customers’ schedule requirements.”
